Home and Away has recently aired a deeply emotional farewell for the beloved character Irene Roberts. In her final episode before a hiatus extending until early next year, Irene embarks on a journey to rehab, where she is set to remain for several months. Lyn McGranger, who has brought Irene to life since 1993, has been taking a break to star as Liz in the new comedy musical The Grandparents Club, which has been touring New South Wales and Victoria since late May.
Lyn has reassured fans that her departure is temporary, and she is not leaving the show permanently. To facilitate Lyn’s time away, the show’s producers crafted a dramatic storyline that sees Irene, a recovering alcoholic, relapse for the first time in nine years. The storyline unfolds as Irene becomes entangled in a complex scheme involving Bronte Langford, a con artist who deceives Irene and the residents of Summer Bay.

Bronte, who initially meets Irene during a routine hospital check-up, pretends to be suffering from a terminal autoimmune disease. Captivated by Bronte’s plight, Irene invites her to stay at her beach house with her family. Bronte’s deception leads Irene to rally her friends and raise funds for what she believes is an expensive, experimental treatment in Canada. Bronte manipulates the situation further by claiming that the diner’s contaminated water supply poisoned her, convincing Irene to pursue legal action against the diner.
When the diner faces a lawsuit, Irene, believing she must cover the costs herself, begins remortgaging her house. Despite Dana’s skepticism about Bronte’s story, which includes discrepancies about her illness and evasive behavior, Irene remains convinced. Dana’s investigation reveals that Bronte is a fraud, prompting her and her accomplice Chase to kidnap Dana in an attempt to cover their tracks.
John and Xander eventually uncover the plot when they follow Bronte’s suspicious activities. They rescue Dana, who had managed to escape her captivity. Bronte and Chase are soon arrested, and the stolen funds are returned. Despite the resolution, Irene is left devastated by her own naivety, struggling with guilt and embarrassment.
Irene’s emotional turmoil drives her towards alcohol once more, and her attempts to cope with her relapse lead to a series of troubling events. After a drunken outburst and an accident that lands her in the hospital, Irene is confronted with the reality of her alcoholism. Her heartfelt apology to those around her, including a tearful reunion with John, marks a turning point.
Realizing she cannot overcome her addiction alone, Irene agrees to check into a rehab clinic. She bids an emotional farewell to her friends, uncertain of how long her recovery will take. As she leaves for the clinic with John, Irene is hopeful yet aware of the long road ahead. Fans will not see Irene on-screen for several months, with her return anticipated in early 2025.
